Almost all songs are inspired, at least in part, by those which have come before them. However, sometimes a song bares such a likeness to its influences that it veers dangerously into the realms of plagiarism. Today I look at seven such songs that, to varying degrees, 'rip off' other songs.

Also, I forgot to title on screen that the version of ‘Bad Guy’ used at 1:29 is by Seth Everman. You can view the full cover here: kgglobal.info/phone/joiErYq70Le8ooo/video.html 🌝

The last bit there seems to me would be as if one reggae band sued another for skanking, one key element in reggae. Which would be silly.

So, it's about getting a share in 'profit'? Does that mean if it is a charity and doesn't make money for the composer/musician, they can't ask for money? I think it should be about fairness, and not a black or white 'Yes or no' unless it is very clear and deliberate. 'My Sweet Lord' has a distinct feel away from 'He's So Fine'. After thousands of songs, it's bound to happen that one person will come up with something close or identical to someone else's song. We're all influenced by music - we may not have consciously listened to and stored into our memory. In these cases, we should be reasonable about financial settlements. So, my question is, what happens if you take a dozen 'phrases' [a bar or two] deliberately used as a 'collage' in a section of a song? Can we sing about specific people in politics - without saying anything overtly or suggestively hostile or factually wrong? In Australia, Simon Hunt became Pauline Pantsdown, a satirical portrayal of politician, Pauline Hanson. It was about giving the people a chance to say something. Australia today has no legislation for human rights and is truly Orwellian in suppressing the voices of not only First Nations People, but anyone with disabilities etc. who can't drive to access their needs. Isolation came before covid-19 made it impossible for many in rural areas. In what was once thought of as a 'classless society', 52% of people in Australia's New South Wales state regard themselves as 'middle class', and push for destruction of a once popular railway line to where the Byron Bay BluesFest - an international event was held. NSW even held back local council elections for a year - possibly so that we could not remove the local councillors who support the removal of the railway line for an elitist cycling track. Since 1990, thousands can't go to the beach, visit family or get proper or preferred medical care. 24% in our region have disabilities and so on. Mental health conditions are almost the norm here now.

We are in an age where everything is a mash up of everything else that has ever existed. Say you're a caveperson, you see death of a loved one and realise that life is finite. You are the first person to have an existential crisis. You take a piece of burnt wood from the fire and draw representations of your life experience on the cave wall hoping that future generations will see what you have experienced. This impulse reduces that crisis and you can die happy. This person is the first artist. Along come some new people. See the images in the cave. Say yeah, I can relate to that but I have some some other experiences. They take the original ideas and add something new. Fast forward to now. We have the whole of human history available through a screen. We can see and hear everything. An artist today is completely valid taking whatever they desire from human history, adding their own experience and creating something new from that.

I so wanted to find some dirt on Billie Eilish, but, as a musician, you are limited in ways to end your "four note phrase" and convey the same musical emotion. Unless you are three guys from the Beatles and end creatively with chords like "From A Little Help From My Friends" or "P.S. I Love You" She is an amazing musician. And when you are in Em or Gm, or the rest of your minor fret on the guitar, you get somewhat a similar feeling.

The problem is every chord combination and rythem has been done before. If they split hairs about that then music is surely dead and ownership of every song recorded in the future can only be granted to artists in the past. Some songs are direct sample rip offs while others are different songs with one similar melody. He's so fine and my sweet Lord sound like different songs but the main tunes of piano man and iris sound the same to my ears. I guess there's varying degrees of similarity but subtle chord/rythem matches shouldn't result in a lawsuit.

People say that those who are content creators on KGglobal and use royalty free music will eventually be sued if the creators are monetized and the video with the supposedly royalty free music goes viral. The song creator then changes the royalty free to copyright and goes after all of the creators ad revenue for that particular video. Google it and search YT for it. Be careful out there!

I wrote a guitar riff that was so unique and different to me at the time. I then heard this exact riff in a song at Spanish restaurant I later worked at. There was no way this song could have influenced my my own, because there was no way I would have it previously. i had never listened to Spanish pop music before. The moral of the story is be careful when using the term rip-off. It could simply be a coincidence. I've experienced this first hand.

When i see videos like this it just makes me not want to make music. Because anyone can sue anyone over trivial shit. But Vanilla Ice was blatant rip off. Everything is basically a remix of something else weather you've consciously hear of it or not. Theres only so many notes on a keyboard and fewer sounds a drumkit can make.

I always found it interesting that Vanilla Ice was absolutely crushed for lifting the Queen bass line but MC Hammer lifted Rick James’s “Super Freak” note for note and he wasn’t criticized. Why is that? Petty knew better than to criticize The Strokes because he (Petty) absolutely ripped off little known Minneapolis band The Jayhawks earlier in his (Petty’s) career. The Jayhawks were the opening band for an early 90’s Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers tour. On that tour The Jayhawks played their great song “Waiting For The Sun” every night. Shortly after that tour, Petty released his greatest hits album which included a new Petty song called “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”. “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” is a stone cold rip off of The Jayhawks’ “Waiting For The Sun”. Listen to the two songs. No question. But The Jayhawks did not have the $ to go after him. It’s also why Petty never went after the Red Hot Chili Peppers song which was clearly influenced by “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”. I love Petty but he was no saint when it comes to ripping people off.

I always wonder with stuff like this where it's very similar and not actually ripped off (such as Vanilla Ice with "Ice Ice Baby") if it's more of just a "There's nothing new under the sun" situation. In the drumming community we always joke that if you think you came up with some slick new beat, almost certainly someone, somewhere has already made up that beat. To use an old phrase, "there's only so many ways to skin a cat". I think also, if we consider the fact that "pop" music generally isn't known for its musical complexity, I feel like that lends itself to the above described reasoning.

This whole "rip off" is nonsense. Every "original" song rips off something else. This is literally how music is formed, by thoughts by the composer which use elements of what they've heard before. It reminds me of the same pettiness by the RIAA when they sued Napster users for millions.

On Jim Morrison‘s song it isn’t those four notes making it sound similar. Those four notes are almost identical if not identical sounding. And other parts of the song like you said the melody are very similar. So she has an identical section with a similar sounding song. It’s a rip off, it may not have been done intentionally but it still is.

Some of these were more egregious than others. Lana Del Ray clearly copied 'Creep' and somehow didn't think anyone would notice. She even ended the phrase with the same vowel sound. Uptown Funk didn't lift itself from a single piece of work and anyone who plays guitar could tell you any simple riff has probably been played by a million people many different ways.
