ABOUT JAY LENO'S GARAGE ON CNBC
Hosted by legendary comedian and “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno, the series explores our obsession with all things automotive. From classic cars to supercars and everything in-between, Jay is hitting the road to discover the most exciting, weird and wonderful vehicles ever made and meet the passionate people behind their wheels. Each one-hour themed episode features a mix of stunts, challenges, reviews, and celebrity interviews that showcases the colorful history of the automobile. Whether he’s exploring the story of an iconic brand, road-testing the newest super car, or investigating the latest automotive innovations, there is no wheel Jay won’t get behind to tell the story of our love affair with the car.

About Jay Leno: Acclaimed TV late night show host, admired stand-up comedian, best-selling children’s book author, much-in-demand corporate speaker, lovable TV and movie voice-over artist, pioneering car builder and mechanic, and philanthropist…it’s no wonder that Jay Leno is widely characterized as “the hardest working man in show business.”

I've seen this type of car before I happen to kind of like it kind of curious how old would do on a rough road that is a crazy suspension

Great videos Jay, thanks. I had a bog standard 2CV and as you say the engineering is quirky but highly functional. Can I offer a few notes? The suspension you mentioned is unusual because one (horizontal) spring does both wheels, a rod from each end of the spring connects the front and back swinging arm suspension component. The electrics use the same theme, one coil does both cylinders without a distributer. The coil is wired between the 2 spark plugs so it pulls electrons out of one cylinder head, through the spark plug, through the coil then pushes them through the other spark plug into the other cylinder head. So both plugs spark on each each cycle (it's redundant on the exhaust cycle). Taking the car apart requires minimal tools. For instance, the single wheel brace takes wheels off and also the front fenders (3 large nuts). The bonnet (hood) hinge is just made of a interlocking folded metal edges so to remove the bonnet you just slide it sideways, no tools required! Lovely practical car!

Man... my mom had one. I have a few memories of riding in it as a kid. She replaced it with damn Fiat Uno! A few years later the 2CV became trendy again and I wished we didn't let it go.

7:30 "You' ve got a very optimistic 120kph [speedometer] [...] About 72mph is all you get out of this" 72mph : 116 kph So the 2cv wasn't lying.

This 2CV maybe is a '67 but Hoffman sold its transformation kit starting from 1988, so this car is a mix-and-match between an old '67 and a very late Eighties 2CV. The 120km/h speedometer could be not so optimistic. If this car ha an updated Eighties engine, it'll reach a 110km/h max speed.
Carlo Duroni
Carlo Duroni 26 күн мурун
The 2CV (as like its derivatives like the Ami and the Dyane) did not have a real heater. But they had a clever and cheap alternative: a duct on each side takes the air from the front and makes it pass close to the exhaust manifold before having it heated before going into the car. You can't get extreme heating but the plus sides are that you don't get any foul odour usually coming from old style water-to-air exchangers, it's faster to heat and it doesn't rob the engine from needed heat in the cold climate.

Seeing that a 2cv is a very bad build quality and an unsafe car, I think the Trabant has been very unfair. A Trabant is the best among other affordable utility vehicles. This car was blackened as it was built in a communist state. The idiots blame it in ignorance, but it is one of the most important cars.

Thanks for this pleasant report on this fantastic car. The 2CV was cheap and indestructible, really. There are still 2CV clubs in Europe, especially in the Netherlands where there are a lot of fans. Let me tell you a fun fact: some 20 years ago (I'm an old man now ...) I had sold a car a little too early while the next one was not yet available, so I had a problem. To fill the gap I bought a used 2CV (about 15 years old) and I paid 6000 FF (about 900€ today) for it (I'm French). I used it about 6 months, until I got my new car and then I went to a garage, specialized in 2CV, to see if they could come with a reasonable offer. They told me: well, we can sell it 12,000 FF and our commission will be 3000 FF. Not cheap but I accepted. Within 1 month the car was sold as foreseen and I got 9000 FF so that I made a profit of 3000 FF! It's the only used car I ever had whose price increased by 50% in 6 months! But it was a 2CV ... - By the way, 2CV has nothing to do with 2 cylinders: it's the abbreviation for "2 chevaux" which means "2 Horses" (understood 2HP) in reference to a tax which was depending on the size of the car, the power, etc ... Obviously it was not the actual power of the engine, but a "fiscal power" to calculate the tax. In fact the car was named after its tax level : 2HP, in French 2CV (the minimum). As an example the DS 21 (Citroën) was rated "9 CV" while the engine produced 109HP SAE. - Regarding the rumors you mentioned about the basket of eggs: that's true, it was really part of the car specifications and it became a selling point later on. - You didn't mentioned the ashtray this time: there is one in the 2CV (I'm kidding) - The French just think differently ... Well it's fun and friendly and I wish it were true but I think Citroën was definitely thinking differently, not the French (although ...) Best Regards

You're a nice man, Jay. It brings me heartful memories watching these videos, especially the Traction avant and the 2CV. I Have 5 sisters and brothers, so my dad bought a Traction 11 "familiale", with room for the maximum 9 people allowed to the standard driving license drivers at these times ('60 and '70s) in France. We all have a lot of memories with this car. Also, I happened to drive a Mehari - the buggy version of the 2CV - in a military camp during my time. With it I managed to pass through obsacles that I could not cross with a Jeep, and which even gave some of the tank drivers headaches. Will you some day acquire one of these cars and issue a video ? Greetings from France, and keep up the good work.

My neighbour, in the 80's, was a medic. He could afford a better car but, he loved his 2CV. I remember him entering my neighbourhood soo fast that, one of the wheels, was in the air. Eventualy he got older and bought more expensive cars, like, Audi A6, BMW 5 series and others. Once i talked to him about his 2 CV and his response was... "It's the coolest car I still have on my garage".

I had a Charleston in this colour, great car.. cheap to run, soft top, easy to fix, and is a great off roader as they were light weight and have great suspension. Touring through Belgium was a gas in one. The Charleston has enough room in the back for a drum kit and then some... it is perhaps the perfect car.

Jay, I love the pandemic versions, it's great to watch you being you while sharing these fun and interesting cars. The shift pattern certainly points toward the French doing things differently. That's an odd four-speed shift pattern. The shifter is odd too but it works beautifully. I understand the shocks are attached to the wheels suspensions by use of rods and cables. My OCD is on fire with that single post steering wheel being off-center. The two-cylinder engine moves that car right along.

Driving my 5 speed 98 Escort to work till it now has 346 ,000 on the clock, On the 130 mile round trip , I am always happy when I make it home and say a quiet thanks. and after driving it so long you learn to sense its mood , some days are better than others , just two days ago I started watching the Ultra gauge i added and it was running a bit hot 204 instead of the usual 197, so I decided to replace the thermostat, of course the first bolt broke off in the head, i figured it was the end of the car, deciding to forge ahead , another bolt broke its head off, and the third came loose ok. carefully prying off the housing the original thermostat was in pieces and could have clogged the passage off at any time on the highway getting me stuck, I very carefully using a new set of visegrips with sharp teeth gripped the stubs of bolt sticking out of the head and 1/8 turn by turn got them both loose, Happiness occurred as i realized I could fix it , i spent a few hours carefully cleaning the parts, put on a new hose too and drove it today 130 plus miles, Feeling like i just got a new car. great fun to bring one back from the brink of the junk yard. and any car that gets you home when running injured is worth a solid attempt to keep it going. Happy the old girl lives.

As I remember reading it, they called it a 2CV (deux cheveau) because the the owner was taxed the same as owning 2 horses. I read an article, in Auto Restorer magazine I believe, about the 5CV (cinq cheveau) that was taxed at the rate of 5 horses. It was all-wheel drive, but it was two engines & two transaxles. Great video Mr Leno.
