Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
In today's video we'll be looking at the famous Boeing 737 MAX. What caused the grounding of this plane? What did Boeing do to get her certified? I'll give you a better understanding of the MCAS system. The easiest explanation on how the system works by using a bicycle! I'll briefly mention the Angle of Attack vane that caused the problems with the MCAS! Is it safe to fly this beautiful airplane again?

@Sebastian Floyd With the max engine location and my background, until the FAA mandates proper blade off testing as I outlined in my post, from a scientific data testing point of view, I am going to avoid the max at this time as much as humanly possible until the proper blade off, on wing testing is done in current configuration and proven through at least 3 data blade off testing points to be safe. The fuselage damage that just occurred on United fight 328 would have been significant on a Boing 737 Max due to the Max engine location, in my opinion.

Why don't you show again the diagram presented of the Boeing 737 800 at time 6'00" again with the new 737 max later? ? ? You would make it that way easier to understand... why don't you show the lever arm of the 737 max resulting by putting the engine in front of the wing instead of below as with the B737 800. Good day.

I could not agree more Captain Joe, your Video,s are always superb , so well done, I have now just to try and convince my Wife that the Boeing 737 ' Max ' is now and is a safe Aircraft to fly in, We have flown thousands of miles in all models of the 737 and never had any cause to worry until now. I do feel as you do that The Boeing Company has done huge harm to itself which may take some time to put right.

9:00 small correction, you don't need laminar flow to have attached flow. Lots of the flow over a wing can be turbulent without flow separation :)

Will you please do a video explaining the full story of DHL 611 Uberlingen Mid Air collision. At lot of people blame the Skywise company for putting the air traffic controller under stress but now I was reading that ATC is trained to deal with that and it was negligence of Peter Nielsen for prioritizing an Airbus rather than ensuring his air space was clear of any conflict.

It's a 57 year old aircraft that Boeing threw modern tech and engines on and is selling to make cash. The fundamental issues go far beyond MCAS and go right down to the design. This aircraft can never be made safe. It's a disaster waiting to happen again and again.

Deathtrap, it's 40 years old. It is not designed for the engines fancase size. Board of directors were thinking about their yearly bonuses not about anyone's lives. The most important characteristic you want in a cargo hauler?> STABILITY! If you need 2 computers to keep your airframe stable IT BETTER SAY F-22 OR F-35 ON IT'S SIDE. The MC-21-300 in the airframe Boeing should have built.

B-737 MAX is still unbalance because of the placement of the engines. Why don't just Boeing company add some ballast weight to recalibrate the centre of gravity? I know it would affect the engine performance but still better than MCAS I suppose.

It's done on every flight. The ballast is called "passengers, cargo, fuel". They all shift the CG around. But even without pax, cargo and fuel the CG has to be within its limits. An unbalanced plane wouldn't be allowed to fly.

It starts with the same old wrong story that has been around for ages. They even compare the MAX to the original 737, however the engines were already moved forward on the 737 classic starting with the -300 in 1984. The CFM56 couldn't be mounted the same way as the JT8D. The animation is also wrong, MCAS doesn't deflect the elevators, it moves the whole horizontal stabilizer. But she also said that MCAS has been fixed. About the quality control I don't know, but it would affect other models, like the 787 for example, and wouldn't be limited to the 737 MAX.

The Irony is that the 737-Max is PERFECTLY SAFE to fly without MCAS. The pitch up behavior is no worse than with jets like the 757. If the 737-Max was a new airplane the MCAS is a totally unnecessary system; it would be perfectly fine as it was. MCAS was there exclusively to make the 737-Max mimic the flight characteristics of the previous 737-NG family almost exactly. This was important to reduce retraining of the crew from the previous generation to the Max generation and make it more attractive to existing 737 operators.

Considering that 737 MAX planes have been flying since December 9, 2020 and since then over 10,000 flights have been conducted with the type in regular passenger service, now with 12 airlines world-wide, it shows that there are enough voluntaries who fly on it ;) I certainly would, and I don't know any anti-maxer personally.

Sick Boeing......employees knew about hidden software but chose to keep quiet,shameful. 737 Max8 is TOXIC as far as i'm concerned,my next trip to Spain is in the car.Whistleblowers in multi national companies should be encouraged,not stiefeld. If there is one industry I trust to design, test, build and operate airliners with Passenger Safety as Priority One--it is companies exemplified by Boeing, and the dedication of Airline Crews flying with the major airlines. If exemplary airline crews and accident investigators like Captains Sullenberger & Skiles may be encouraged to regularly contribute their leadership and experience to corporate decision-making from this point, airplane orders may increase, and public trust in an historically trustworthy industry will return.

You didn't mention - did Boeing add a redundant AoA sensor and input to the MCAS, along with some way to alert the flight deck about a sensor disagreement if it occurred? And I wonder if maybe Boeing ought to take a good hard look at what's become of their corporate culture and move the corporate offices back to Seattle, where the hands-dirty people can have better access and input to the pencil-pushers?

They reprogrammed MCAS to take inputs from both AoA sensors at all times. No sensor was added, the 737 MAX (all 737s in fact) has always had two. The bug causing the AoA Disagreement alert not to be displayed has also been taken care of, it's working again on all 737 MAXes just like it did on the NG.

Well said Captain Joe. I've come across that greed in other areas of manufacturing. I refused to drive one vehicle bc. the brakes were not safe. The owner just found someone else to drive, instead of having the brakes bled out, which wouldn't have taken all that long.

Airbus had a similar incident with Qantas 72. Faulty AOA data got fed to the flight computer, the Airbus automation commanded a 10 degrees pitch down multiple times despite the flight characteristics being fine and not need any of the protection modes. AFSB findings led to Airbus modifying their software to prevent bad AOA data causing an event like that again, but the cause of the AOA data being bad in the first place was never found. Scary sometimes, no matter how sophisticated the software automation is now, there's always an edge case somewhere. Granted MCAS on 737 MAX had many more factors and deception and corporate greed is right up there. RIP to those who were victims of Boeing's failures.

It's doesn't make me sad... It makes me angry. Boeing had always been known for building planes with superior pilot feedback and flyability. They sold a product that undermined that, AND DIDN'T TELL ANYONE, just to make a profit faster. I'm sure the CEO and his team will at BEST get Golden Parachutes, but they DESERVE a sentence of a decade of community service on minimum wage.

One wonders how test pilots missed this. One also wonders how the systems on the plane didn’t sound the alarm on sensor values that would obviously conflict with actual operating parameters. Also, given the A320’s well known propensity for presenting pilots with confusing data that required them to recalculate or override something, wouldn’t pilots be reporting such things as having to manually trim a computer-controlled aircraft? Not laying blame, just wondering.

What was most poignant about this whole affair (at least to me) was that at the same time shitty electronics and even shittier programming caused so much deaths in the MAX, Boeing *also* fucked up their code and electronics on their Starliner test flight. I really hope that heads did roll in their management for those fuck-ups and, more importantly, that they - and all their competitors! - learn from it.

Airbus is pumping them out as fast as they can but if you go buy an A320 you'll still be in a waiting list. Also If your already in line for the 737 and your tooled up for the 737 line up it's quicker and less expensive to stay with the 737 platform

Was not a defeatable system -"computer knows best"... Boeing purposely skipped mcas training because that would indicate major system change and therefore requiring a lengthy recertification (and times is $$$); gamble ended up costing more time and $$$ though...and bunch of dead people.

The first iteration of this plane should never have been certified in the first place. Inherent problems due to fitting very large engines, too high on the wing on a plane not designed for them. . Hundreds of people died because of it but no criminal repercussions to anybody of the Boeing management. Corporate greed should not be rewarded, it should be punished.

Even now after almost two years there is an incomplete fix.The MAX should have three Angle of Attack sensors . Two forming a reference base for a potentially damaged third. An incomplete system that has demonstrated it is a Catastrophic System. This is an official designation of a system that has the potential to kill all on board. Such a system should have maximum redundancy. This was completely ignored on initial certification. Totally illegal!!! Boeing are still handling control of the aircraft biggest control surface to an ancient single channel low powered computer with a sensor imput that could have much better redundancy.

Apparently whoever made those key decisions forgot that, if enough people start to perceive airlines as less safe, it will dramatically impact how many people fly. It doesn't even require the safety to, objectively, be anywhere near as unsafe as driving a car. It is all about perception. While 346 people died in these 2 crashes, 3,400 people die from car crashes EVERY SINGLE DAY. So, statistically, we would need a lot of airplane crashes to equal the amount of deaths we see from cars. But, perception drives people's behavior, not objective statistics.

Speaking on behalf of all 737 pilots across the globe, as a B737-800 captain myself, I can for sure say that we all feel terribly cheated. And Boeing is yet to instill its confidence back in us; which I don't feel it truly ever will.

Great video, but it is sad to see when greed wins. Boeing was a company of talented engineers, but became a company of "efective managers" who only care about their bonuses. The problem is that Boeing is an important company for US economy as well as military, so they still got away with "murder". Somebody has to be held accountable for these deaths. People involved had go to jail and the company had to be restructured so it won't happen again...

Ford: "Our new car jerks to the right all the time but we'll save money by not fixing the mechanical problem. Instead, we'll use a "software" fix. Maybe a computer will tell a little arm to come out and push the steering wheel right. What a moneysaver!" Boeing moved their Seattle headquarters, formerly run by engineers, to Chicago, where it was run by bean counters. Except they didn't have so many beans to count. Still, a lot of people don't know they're the second biggest military contractor, and we'll be getting in another war soon enough.
